The Bible teaches that God defined giving at the cross when He gave His only begotten Son that whoever would believe in Him would not perish but have everlasting life. This was the greatest act of love toward humanity. The Father showed us His love by giving His Son. The Son showed us His love by giving Himself. The Bible teaches that we are to give as an act of love - joyfully, cheerfully, generously and sacrificially. The Bible also teaches that we are to first give ourselves to the Lord. We love because He first loved us, and we give because He first gave to us. We give our lives to the Lord by confessing with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, and believing in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead. Our giving to the Lord should always be a result of our gratitude for His gift to us of abundant life here, and eternal life in the hereafter. As you consider how much you should give, how often you should give, and the attitude with which you should give, please remember the cross. Jesus shed His blood and paid the ultimate price for our sins. May we give to Him in the same Spirit that He gave to us.
